Bisbee Commuity Y

WINNER OF PAMPERED WEEK

Grand Prize went to Joan Hansen of Bisbee

Joan Hansen has lived in Bisbee for 7 years. She “retired” here after serving 22 years in the United States Air Force as a maintenance officer. She said she bought a book of raffle tickets in front of the post office on Saturday morning because “it was for a good cause”. “I never win anything but I wanted to support the Bisbee Community Y.” Ms. Hansen is thrilled to have won and plans to share it with her brother and sister-in-law at the end of March when they come to visit her. Joan Hansen is Program Manager for CASA, (Court Appointed Special Advocate) who are always looking for volunteers to be advocates for children who have been removed from their family because of abuse or neglect. There is an increasing need for people who will develop a relationship with these children so that the court can consider the child’s best interests. “ If you want to make a difference in a child’s life, call 432-7521” said Ms. Hansen.

“ A NICE PLACE TO LIVE”

“Babe” is like part of the institution, and it seems like she has been there forever. Actually she came just about 10 years ago from Pennsylvania, first, going to Benson where she found herself homeless and at loss for a place to stay. After staying at several shelters, Babe discovered the Bisbee Community Y, which she now calls home.

In just 10 years she has seen a lot of people come and go at the BCY. One person she still speaks of fondly is Ritsko, a women from Japan. They still keep in-touch. One thing Babe likes about the BCY is that it is a “community place” but yet you have your own private rooms. People all share and help each other and are caring most of the time. Babe says she is “comfortable” living at the Bisbee Community Y.

Babe remembers the hostel with good memories of meeting people from all over the world and from all walks of life. She remembers the disturbing days of the remodeling but is happy to have instant hot water, a kitchenette on each floor and both a male and female bathroom on each floor. The building feels safer and cleaner.

Babe’s room is one the 4 th floor with a beautiful view of the town. Her room is warm and cozy, with her arts and crafts decorating walls and nooks. Babe even says she stays in good shape climbing the four flights of stairs many times during the day.

The Bisbee Community Y is proud of the fact that we help so many people who find themselves without a home. There are many reasons that a person can find themself homeless for maybe only a short time or even a lengthy period. There are 23 rooms available. Two are on the first floor and are handicapped accessible. During the winter months, the BCY is almost always full with a waiting list. Each floor is equipped with a kitchenette, communal sitting area and restrooms for both men and women.

To rent a room there are requirements that are set forth by the State Housing as the BCY is a low income housing facility. A resident must qualify according to the regulations and rules set forth by the state and BCY rules.
